Recipe Introduction:
This is a delicious and irresistible treat that brings back fond memories from childhood. With a caramel topping and crunchy nuts in between layers, this dessert is a favorite among family and friends. It was passed down from my mother and became a holiday tradition. What I initially thought was a secret family recipe turned out to be quite famous! Whether you’re making it for a gathering or just for yourself, this sweet and nutty delight will disappear in no time.
Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups of sugar
- ½ cup of butter
- 1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 cup of chopped mixed nuts (pecans, almonds, or walnuts work well)
- 1 box of graham crackers (about 9 full sheets)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
Instructions:
- Prepare the crust: Lay a layer of graham crackers on the bottom of a square baking dish, making sure to cover the entire surface.
- Make the caramel topping: In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, butter, and sweetened condensed milk. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens and turns golden brown (about 10-12 minutes). Be careful not to burn it!
- Add nuts: Once the caramel is ready, stir in the chopped nuts and vanilla extract. Mix well.
- Assemble the dessert: Pour the caramel mixture over the graham crackers in the baking dish, spreading it evenly. Allow it to cool for a few minutes before adding another layer of graham crackers on top.
- Chill and serve: Let the dessert cool completely at room temperature, then refrigerate for at least an hour to let the layers set. Once firm, slice into squares and enjoy!
This dessert is a crowd-pleaser, so be prepared for everyone to ask for the recipe!
