A Reddit user recently shared a bizarre and unsettling experience—waking up to find a massive tonsil stone rolling around in their mouth.
The stone, humorously dubbed a “boulder,” was so large that the user placed a coin next to it in the photo for size comparison.
Tonsil stones, or tonsilloliths, form when food particles, mucus, and saliva become trapped in the crevices of the tonsils and gradually calcify.
Though they’re often small and go unnoticed, they can lead to symptoms like bad breath, sore throat, trouble swallowing, and a persistent bad taste. The Reddit post quickly sparked a mix of amusement and disgust, with one user joking, “Congrats on the newly freshened breath,” while another warned that more stones could still be hidden deep inside the tonsils. Tonsil stones are more common in people with a history of tonsillitis or larger-than-average tonsils, which provide more surface area for debris to get stuck.
In response to the post, one commenter shared their relief about getting their tonsils removed, despite the difficult recovery, saying it was worth it to avoid these kinds of issues. Photos accompanying the story showed just how large some stones can be, including close-ups with rulers and coins for scale. Though the idea of waking up to a rock in your mouth sounds horrifying, tonsil stones are relatively common and usually harmless. Still, this Reddit moment reminded everyone that even small health issues can lead to surprisingly dramatic—and gross—discoveries.
